Digital Economy Bill must not be pushed through - Fred Mackintosh
7.37.55am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 6th Apr 2010
Liberal Democrat Candidate for Edinburgh South Fred Mackintosh has welcomed the decision by Liberal Democrat MPs not to support Labour and Tory plans to push the Digital Economy Bill through this parliament in the days remaining before the likely dissolution of Parliament on Monday.
Fred Mackintosh said, "This bill is extremely controversial. It will severely infringe fundamental human rights by allowing the disconnection of the Internet accounts of a household for alleged copyright infringement. This could have dramatic and disproportionate impacts on all of us and goes well down the route to putting big government in control of our connection to the Internet."
"I am also concerned that the bill will reduce the roll out of open wifi networks and that could damage our economy."
On 30 March 2010 Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Paul Burstow MP tweeted. "I have told the Govt we won't support the Digital Economy Bill as drafted. There is not enough time for MPs to examine it in detail."
