Local Lib Dems Reject Government Fines Plan

3.00.00pm GMT Wed 24th Mar 2010

Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh South have pledged to reject Scottish Government plans to raise parking fines to a mandatory minimum of £40, with possible fines of up to £100!

A Scottish Government consultation said current fines were an insufficient deterrent to motorists in cities where parking space is at a premium.

Gordon Mackenzie, Convenor of Transport for the City of Edinburgh Council said

"The existing level of fines is sufficient deterrent.

"I do not have anybody coming to me saying fines should be higher and I do not support moves to increase them."

Fred Mackintosh added

"The idea that current fines are an insufficient deterrent is nonsense.

"Many families in Edinburgh South are struggling as the Labour Government's recession continues to bite, every penny is precious and because of that they are careful to park responsibly.

"This is just another attempt by the Scottish Government to squeeze more money out of the Council tax payer so it can fund its un-costed election pledges and pet projects."
