Liberal Democrats Stand For Civil Liberties9.30.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 24th Sep 2009
Edinburgh South Westminster Spokesperson Fred Mackintosh has welcomed Nick Clegg's restatement of the Liberal Democrats long-standing commitment to stand up and protect the civil liberties of British citizens. Speaking to Shami Chakrabarti at the Liberty Fringe in the party's conference in Bournemouth Nick Clegg set out his party's commitment to protecting human rights. Nick expressed his concern that although the Conservatives have also condemned the Government's illiberal measures, they show no real commitment to protecting civil liberties and they remain committed to scrapping the Human Rights Act Fred Mackintosh said, "For me the fight to protect out personal liberties against control measures imposed by the Labour Government is my primary motivation as a parliamentary candidate. If we fail to stop this slide down the slippery slope we will suffer a huge erosions of personal liberties. The Liberal Democrat's strongly oppose Labour's illiberal control measures which have deemed the erosion of personal liberty permissible in the name of ensuring public safety." Ms Chakrabarti said she was heartened by Nick Clegg's determination to protect individual civil liberties and by his personal, unequivocal commitment to protecting the Human Rights Act, which she has described as 'our best defence against injustices of all kinds'.
