Labour failing Edinburgh South's unemployed - Mackintosh11.43.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 15th Aug 2009 With unemployment in Edinburgh South back to 1999 levels Liberal Democrat local challenger Fred Mackintosh has attacked the Labour government's response to the recession. "In July there were 1,288 people claiming jobseekers allowance in Edinburgh South - that is 81% up on last year" said Fred Mackintosh "The last time we had that many people out of work and claiming Jobseekers allowances was October 1999. Labour's boom and bust economy has brought the scourge of unemployment back to our community." Research by the Liberal Democrat team in Edinburgh South has revealed that 59% of those claiming Jobseekers Allowance live in Liberton/Gilmerton ward - the area south and east of Cameron Toll - where around a third of the population of the constituency live. Fred Mackintosh continued, "Edinburgh continues to suffer from the collapse of the financial services sector. The Government must take steps now to create real financial institutions to lend and support local businesses and entrepreneurs. That is the only way to get out of this recession and restore the jobs local people need."
