"It is now less than one week until the Royal Mail publishes their list of proposed post office closures for Edinburgh and Lothians" says local campaigner Fred Mackintosh "In the last few weeks hundreds more local people have signed up to our petition to Save Our Post Offices. It is clear that residents of south Edinburgh value their post offices."

According to Royal Mail Members of Parliament and Members of the Scottish Parliament have already been briefed on a confidential basis and the full list of proposed closures will be published on Tuesday 19 August.

In 2006 the Labour Government ordered the Royal Mail to close 2500 post office branches across the UK. The Royal Mail is now going through the process of consulting on which post offices are to close. Edinburgh and Lothians is one of the last areas to hear about the extent of the closures on the city. A six week consultation period will start on 19 August.
