Long-serving south Edinburgh Councillor Marilyne MacLaren has been elected as Executive member for Children and Families in the new Liberal Democrat led council administration. Marilyne was first elected as a Regional Councillor for Marchmont and Sciennes in 1986 and now represents the Meadows/Morningside ward on the city council.

Marilyne will take charge of the Education service and social work services for children and families as many tough decisions have to be made by the council.

Westminster Spokesperson Fred Mackintosh said, "Marilyne has always shown a deep commitment to getting the best deal possible for Edinburgh schools. Labour left allot of problems unsolved in south Edinburgh such as the fabric of James Gillespie's High School and the future of the South Morningside nursery I am sure Marilyne will want to address these as soon as possible."
