Councillors in the Lib Dem/SNP Administration in Edinburgh have signalled that they plan to keep reductions to devolved school budgets to 1% in the coming year despite unprecedented financial challenges. In November last year the Director of Children and Families proposed that £5 million (2.5%) would need to be saved because of severe financial pressures affecting the authority. There was widespread concern amongst parents that such a cut could cause real problems in schools.

City Councillors have approved plans to repair the roof of the Warrender Swim Centre. The pool at the historic Warrender Baths has been closed for months following the sudden fall of a pane of glass from the Victorian roof.

Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Edinburgh South, Fred Mackintosh, today signed a pledge to Edinburgh students ahead of the forthcoming general election that he will vote against any increase in tuition fees in England in the next parliament.
